Alum is a natural mineral from mines alunites.
The first quarries were discovered around the Mediterranean in Syria.
Potassium alum: a totally natural stone which comes from alunite quarries (Syria, Morocco, China, Philippines ...).
Hydrated alumina is a stable form of aluminum which does not bind to the skin and has no risk of transfer into the bloodstream. It is removed through perspiration or when showering and, being chemically inert (no chemical reaction), will not release aluminum, in contrast to hydrates of aluminum chloride as found in some deodorants.
Ammonium alum: a synthetic stone made from ammonium salts (residues of the heavy Asian chemical industry) that are agglomerated again before being sold under the name of ammonium alum. The aluminum from which it is composed is not hydrated and can therefore bind to the skin. Scientists have realized that aluminum chlorohydrate can partially transfer into the bloodstream and that aluminum, among other things, could be a cause of Alzheimer's disease as these molecules accumulate in the brain.
Recognition of these two types of alum stone cannot be done by eye as they look the same. The only way to recognize them is to check the ingredients listed on the packaging.
