Arnica and its amazing flower power!

Arnica and its amazing flower power!

I don’t know if you guys are anything like me, but I bruise like a peach. The wind blows too hard and I seem to get a little purple patch, which I'm really concious about in summertime when you have your legs out for the world to see.  However, I seem to have found the perfect flowery friend to fade these fiendish friends.

So, what is a bruise? A bruise happens when a part of the body is hit (or just tickled in my case) and the muscle fibres and connective tissue underneath are impacted. When this occurs, blood from the ruptured capillaries (small blood vessels) near the skin's surface escapes by leaking out under the skin, like a blood blister under your nail. Because it’s trapped you get this little patch that we like to call a bruise.

Arnica’s magic touch…

Our flowery friend has sesquiterpene lactones in it, which is an anti-inflammatory, meaning it reduces swelling already calming the appearance of the bruise. The other natural chemical it contains is flavonoids, these strengthen the blood vessels reducing the amount of blood spreading under the skin.

In 2010 a study proved arnica was 20% more effective than a vitamin K formulation for reducing bruising. Another study found it as effective as ibuprofen gel for treating osteoarthritis of the hand.

If you’re an athletic sort, Arnica can be super useful on those days where you feel quite literally like you’ve been beat up, as it naturally reduces the swelling in your muscles. Try taking an arnica bath or even better get a loved one to rub some arnica oil into the muscles so they relax and “swell” time.

It’s amazing what the power of the earth can do for us, embrace your inner hippy and use the flower power!

Peace dude!
