About Donkey milk

It is said that Cleopatra, Queen of Ancient Egypt, took baths in donkey's milk to preserve the beauty and youth of her skin. Legend has it that no less than 700 donkeys were needed to provide the quantity of milk necessary for her daily bath.

This was also the case of Poppaea Sabina (30 – 65), second wife of Roman Emporor Nero, who is referred to in Plyni’s description of the donkey's milk virtues for the skin:

It is generally believed that donkey's milk effaces wrinkles in the face, renders the skin more delicate, and preserves its whiteness : and it is a well-known fact, that some women are in the habit of washing their face with it seven times daily, strictly observing that number. Poppaea, the wife of the Emperor Nero, was the first to practise this; indeed, she had sitting-baths, prepared solely with donkey's milk, for which purpose whole troops of she- donkey used to attend her on her journeys.

Pauline Bonaparte(1780–1825), Napoleon’s sister, is also reported to have used donkey's milk for her skin’s health care.

Donkey's milk is still used today in the manufacture of soaps and moisturizers. The sales revenue complements what donkey's breeders earn from raising livestock and renting donkeys to hikers.

History of Marseillse soap

Marseille soap
or Savon de Marseille is a traditional soap made from vegetable oils that has been made around Marseille, France, for about 600 years, the first documented soapmaker in the area being recorded in about 1370. By 1688, Louis XIV introduced regulations (Edict of Colbert) limiting the use of the name savon de Marseille to soaps made in and around the Marseille area, and only from olive oil.  Today this law still applies, although the regulations now allow other vegetable oils to be used. Only a few savonneries (soap factories) near Marseille still make this legendary soap in the traditional manner.   But Savon de Marseille is once again being rediscovered for its purity and gentle skin care, and its popularity is on the rise worldwide.
