Let's Beat Plastic Pollution: World Environment Day 2023

This year's World Environment Day marks the 50th anniversary of the awareness event.

Over the past five decades, World Environment Day has grown to be one of the largest global platforms for environmental outreach, with tens of millions of people participating through in-person events and actions around the world.

This year’s event focuses on solutions to plastic pollution – a topic very close to our own hearts!

'Actively seek solutions'

At Eco Natural Products we are highly conscious of reducing our impact on the environment, and actively seek solutions to how our business can minimise its waste.

For starters, wherever possible, we reuse packaging material.

When taking delivery of stock, the team here will carefully remove any packaging so that it can be reused.

That packaging can include the box itself, which will be thoroughly cleaned and repurposed for use either within our warehouse, or sent to our dispatch team, who will carefully pack your order into the recycled box.

If the original box is too damaged or unsuitable for use by either of our warehouse or dispatch teams it will be cleaned and then put through our shredder machine.

A shredded box is highly useful as packing material, and helps to ensure that your delivery arrives safely and in perfect condition.

'Encourage reuse'

We also encourage the reuse of packaging through our in-store recycling scheme.

Our shop in Poole, Dorset in the UK, has a recycling drop-off point, which enables people to bring in any unwanted packaging that we can repurpose.

This means that packaging brought into our shop can be used by our warehouse team, or even dispatched to anywhere in the world as part of an online order!

'Entirely biodegradable'

Inevitably, a small amount of plastic packaging will arrive in to the business.

However, we always ensure that any plastic packaging is reused, normally by our warehouse team.

We also clean and responsibly recycle any cardboard, paper or plastic packaging material that is unfortunately unfit to reuse.

Of course, our ultimate aim is to reduce the amount of potential waste coming into the business, and we pay particular attention to this when sourcing our products.

For example, our Marseilles soap range is entirely biodegradable and arrives without any plastic packaging at all!

'Champion solutions to reduce plastic packaging'

The UN says that 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is designed to be used only once.

Of that, less than 10% is recycled, with an estimated 19-23 million tonnes ending up in lakes, rivers and seas annually.

It’s up to all of us to help champion solutions to reduce the impact of plastic pollution.

Our Top Three Tips to help reducing plastic waste

1. Bring your own reusable items

Carry reusable alternatives for commonly used single-use plastic items.

Invest in a sturdy water bottle, a reusable coffee cup, and a set of reusable utensils.

By bringing your own, you can avoid disposable plastic bottles, cups, and cutlery when you're on the go.

2. Say no to plastic bags

Plastic bags are one of the most prevalent and harmful forms of plastic waste.

Make it a habit to carry reusable shopping bags whenever you go grocery shopping or run errands.

And keep a few compact foldable bags in your bag or backpack for unexpected purchases!

3. Be mindful of packaging

When shopping, pay attention to the packaging of the products you buy.

Opt for items with minimal or no plastic packaging. Choose products in glass, paper, or cardboard containers instead.

Additionally, consider buying in bulk when possible to minimise packaging waste.
