Conventional antiperspirants use aluminium chlorohydrate to block sweat glands – a synthetic compound linked to skin irritation and, in ongoing research, to broader health concerns. Salt of the Earth deodorants work differently: their crystal deodorants use potassium alum, a naturally occurring mineral salt with molecules too large to penetrate the skin, which instead creates an antibacterial surface layer that stops odour-causing bacteria from forming.
