Batana Oil

Batana oil is a cold-pressed, unrefined golden oil extracted from the palm nuts of Elaeis oleifera — the American oil palm. Naturally rich in vitamin E, beta-carotene, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants, it has been used for centuries by the Miskito people of Honduras as a traditional treatment for hair and skin.

🌿 Unrefined & cold-pressed  ·  Traditionally used for 500+ years  ·  Key compounds: vitamin E, beta-carotene, oleic acid, linoleic acid
Origin: La Mosquitia, Honduras  ·  Colour: deep amber-brown  ·  Scent: earthy, distinctive

Origin & Sourcing

Most high-quality batana oil comes from the La Mosquitia rainforest region of Honduras — one of Central America’s most biodiverse ecosystems. Here, the Miskito people have hand-harvested and traditionally processed Elaeis oleifera palm nuts for generations using a method that requires no chemicals or heat.

The Miskito are known throughout the region as the Tawira — “People with Beautiful Hair” — a name widely attributed to their longstanding use of batana oil. Authentic batana oil sourcing supports this indigenous community and helps preserve traditional ecological knowledge.

How It Is Made

Authentic batana oil is produced using a traditional, chemical-free cold-pressing process. The palm nuts are hand-harvested from wild trees, sun-dried, then ground and cold-pressed to extract the oil. No heat, no solvents — the full nutrient profile of the nut is preserved in every drop.

Active Compounds

  • Vitamin E — tocopherols & tocotrienols: Potent antioxidants that protect hair and skin from oxidative stress and support scalp health
  • Beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A): Supports cell renewal; contributes to the oil’s deep amber colour
  • Oleic acid (omega-9): A deeply penetrating fatty acid that moisturises and nourishes hair from within
  • Linoleic acid (omega-6): Supports the skin’s natural moisture barrier and scalp integrity
  • Phytosterols: Plant compounds with natural anti-inflammatory properties
  • Polyphenols: Antioxidants that help protect against environmental damage

Traditional Uses

Among the Miskito people of Honduras, batana oil has traditionally been used to:

  • Strengthen and condition hair, reduce breakage, and support hair growth
  • Add natural lustre and shine to hair
  • Moisturise and soften skin, particularly dry or sun-exposed areas
  • Soothe scalp dryness and irritation
  • Protect and nourish skin after sun exposure

Traditional use statements describe historical practices and do not constitute cosmetic or medical claims.

How to Use Batana Oil

For hair

  • Scalp treatment: Massage into scalp, leave 30 minutes or overnight, then shampoo out. Use 2–3 times per week.
  • Deep conditioning mask: Apply from root to tip, cover with a warm towel, leave 1 hour, then shampoo out.
  • Frizz & shine serum: Apply 1–2 drops to dry ends to smooth frizz and add shine.

For skin

  • Apply a few drops to clean face or body and massage until absorbed.
  • Use morning or evening as a treatment oil or mix with your usual moisturiser.

Scent note

Batana oil has a distinctive earthy, smoky aroma from the traditional processing method. It fades as the oil absorbs. For a lighter scent, mix with jojoba or sweet almond oil, or apply as an overnight treatment.
