Soap Nuts

Soap nuts are the dried shells of the Sapindus mukorossi berry — also known as the Indian soapberry — a tree native to the Himalayan foothills and cultivated across India, Nepal, and Pakistan. They are a 100% natural, plastic-free, and biodegradable alternative to chemical laundry detergents, used across South Asia for centuries and increasingly popular in the UK as an eco-friendly household cleaner.

What Are Soap Nuts?

Despite the name, soap nuts are not nuts at all — they are the outer shells (husks) of a small berry fruit. After harvesting, the seeds are removed and the shells are sun-dried until they become dark, leathery, and slightly sticky. This stickiness is a sign of high saponin content — a good thing.

Soap nuts have been used as a natural detergent across South Asia for generations, both for laundry and as a gentle household cleaner. In Ayurvedic tradition, they have also been used in hair care and skin care.

How Do Soap Nuts Work?

The active ingredient in soap nuts is saponin — a naturally occurring plant glycoside that acts as a surfactant. When soap nut shells come into contact with warm water, saponin is released and creates a gentle lather that reduces surface tension, allowing water to penetrate and lift dirt, oil, and grime from fabric fibres and surfaces.

Saponin is gentle, rinses out completely, and leaves no chemical residue on fabric or surfaces. It is naturally antibacterial and safe for sensitive skin.

Active Compound: Saponin

  • Saponin — a plant-based surfactant and natural cleaner; the primary active compound in soap nut shells
  • Naturally antibacterial — mild antimicrobial properties
  • pH neutral — gentle on fabrics, colours, and skin
  • Fully biodegradable — breaks down safely in the environment and in compost

Traditional & Modern Uses

  • Laundry detergent — the most common use; effective in washing machines at 30°C–90°C
  • Natural shampoo — traditionally used across South Asia for hair cleansing, anti-dandruff, and scalp care
  • All-purpose household cleaner — boiled soap nut liquid cleans surfaces, floors, and worktops
  • Hand wash & body wash — gentle enough for daily skin use
  • Jewellery cleaner — safe for silver and gold
  • Dishwasher detergent — can be used in place of standard dishwasher tablets
  • Garden pest spray — saponin has natural antifungal properties and deters common garden pests

Sustainability

Soap nuts are one of the most genuinely sustainable cleaning products available. The shells are a by-product of fruit production, require no synthetic processing, and are fully compostable after use. They generate no plastic waste and the wash water is safe to dispose of in the garden.
