Herbatint Colour Chart & Hair Colour Guide
Herbatint is a gentle permanent hair colour gel made in Italy. It is free from ammonia, resorcinol, alcohol, parabens and fragrance, contains eight plant extracts, and has been tested on sensitive skin. This guide shows every Herbatint shade we stock and explains how to choose the right one.
How Herbatint shade codes work
Each shade has a number for depth, from 1 (Black) to 10 (Platinum Blonde), and a letter for the reflect or tone:
- N – Natural: natural results and the strongest grey coverage; choose it to keep your own colour.
- C – Ash: cool ash tones that soften unwanted red or copper undertones; best mixed with the matching N shade.
- D – Golden: warm golden blonde or brown reflections for a bright, natural finish.
- M – Mahogany: brown-red reflections that add depth to dull hair; flattering on fair, rosy complexions.
- R – Copper: warm copper reflections, especially flattering on golden-toned complexions.

Choosing the right shade
- Match the depth of your natural roots. If you are torn between two shades, choose the lighter one: it is easier to go darker later.
- On natural, untreated hair Herbatint can lighten by up to 2 shades. Hair that has already been coloured cannot be lightened, only kept the same or made darker.
- Grey hair: N shades 1–8 cover 100% of grey from the first application. Shades 9 and 10 and the C, D, M and R series are lighter in pigment, so for medium to high grey, mix your chosen shade 50:50 with the matching N shade (for example 30 ml 4R + 30 ml 4N). For 9N or 10N on very grey hair, mix with 8N.
- All shades can be mixed; just keep the total colour equal to the developer (1:1).
- If red or orange tones appear over time, mix your usual shade with one from the C (Ash) series.
What is in the box
60 ml colour gel, 60 ml developer, 50 ml Royal Conditioner and a pair of gloves. One box is enough for up to two root applications.
| Application | Colour | Developer |
|---|---|---|
| Roots (up to 2 cm) | 30 ml | 30 ml |
| Short hair | 40 ml | 40 ml |
| Long hair | 60 ml | 60 ml |
Step by step
- Sensitivity test, 48 hours before every use. Mix a drop of colour and developer, apply it to a plaster and place it behind the ear or on the forearm. Rinse after 45 minutes. If itching, redness or swelling appears within 48 hours, do not use the product.
- Strand test. Apply a little mixture to a hidden strand, cover with foil for 40 minutes, rinse and check the result.
- Prepare. Colour dry hair that has not been washed for 24 hours and is free from styling products. Smooth a barrier cream along the hairline.
- Mix. Wearing gloves, mix equal parts colour and developer in a plastic or glass bowl (not metal) until it forms a gel.
- Apply. Divide the hair into four sections and apply to the roots first. After 30 minutes, work the rest through the lengths and leave for another 10 minutes (40 minutes in total). Do not shorten or extend the time.
- Rinse and condition. Rinse until the water runs clear, wash, then apply the Royal Conditioner for 1 minute and rinse.
Unmixed bottles keep for 12 months if tightly closed; mixed product cannot be stored. After a perm, wait about two weeks and reduce the time on the lengths by 10 minutes.
Herbatint Vegetal Color
For a 100% plant-based alternative, Herbatint Vegetal Color is made from organic dye plants and Ayurvedic herbs, certified COSMOS Organic by Ecocert. Choose Cherry Red Power for vivid red tones or Neutral Cassia Power for shine and care without colour. Mix the powder with lukewarm water, apply to clean, damp hair, cover and leave for 60–90 minutes, then rinse without shampoo and wait 48 hours before the first wash. Note that the permanent gel is not recommended on hair coloured with henna or Vegetal Color.
Safety
Hair colourants can cause severe allergic reactions. Please read and follow the instructions. It is recommended to carry out a sensitivity test 48 hours before application. This product is not intended for use on persons under the age of 16. Temporary black henna tattoos may increase the risk of allergy.
Do not colour your hair:
- If you have a rash on your face or if your scalp is sensitive, irritated or damaged,
- If you have ever experienced any reactions after colouring your hair,
- If you have experienced reactions after a temporary black henna tattoo in the past.
Do not use to dye eyelashes and eyebrows. Wear suitable gloves. Avoid contact with the eyes. Rinse eyes immediately if product comes into contact with them. Contains diamminobenzenes and hydrogen peroxide.
FAQs
Does Herbatint wash out?
No. It is a permanent colour; it can lose intensity with harsh products or treatments.
Does it contain PPD?
Yes, at a concentration about six times lower than the EU limit once mixed. Dyes without PPD use an equivalent ingredient with a similar allergy risk, so always do the 48-hour test.
Can I use it on hair coloured with henna?
It is not recommended, because henna coats the hair and stops the colour taking. Let the henna grow out first and always do a strand test.
Can I use it during pregnancy?
Herbatint advises using it only after speaking to your doctor.
Is it vegan?
Yes. It contains no animal-derived ingredients and is not tested on animals.
