Basmati brown rice is the whole-grain version of classic basmati — the same long, slender grains with their characteristic fragrant, nutty aroma, but with the outer bran layer intact rather than milled away. These certified organic brown basmati grains from Just Natural Organic cook to a slightly firmer, chewier texture than white basmati and carry a more complex, earthy flavour alongside a significantly higher nutritional profile.
Brown basmati provides substantially more fibre, magnesium, phosphorus, B vitamins, and manganese than white basmati, as these nutrients are concentrated in the bran and germ layers that remain intact. It has a lower glycaemic index than white rice, supporting more gradual blood sugar release.
Certified organic by the Soil Association. Plastic-free, home-compostable packaging. Available in 500g and 1000g.
Use in all basmati dishes — biryanis, pilafs, curries, and rice salads. Rinse well before cooking. Cook in a 1:2 ratio (rice:water) for 35–40 minutes, or soak for 30 minutes first to reduce cooking time to 25 minutes. Rest covered for 10 minutes before fluffing.
Recipe idea — Brown Basmati Pilaf with Caramelised Onion: Rinse 300g brown basmati. Fry 2 large sliced onions in olive oil for 20–25 minutes until deeply caramelised. Add 2 cloves garlic, 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp coriander, ½ tsp turmeric, and the rinsed rice. Stir for 2 minutes. Add 600ml vegetable stock, bring to a boil, then cover and simmer on low for 35 minutes. Rest 10 minutes, then top with toasted almonds, raisins, and fresh coriander. A nourishing, one-pan dish with depth of flavour from the caramelised onions.

FAQs
Does brown basmati still have the basmati aroma?
Yes — brown basmati retains the characteristic fragrant, floral aroma of basmati rice (from 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, a naturally occurring aroma compound). The nutty notes of the bran complement this fragrance, making brown basmati arguably more complex in aroma than white basmati.
How long does brown basmati take to cook?
Brown basmati takes 35–40 minutes to cook from dry, or 25–30 minutes if soaked for 30 minutes beforehand. The extra time compared to white basmati is because the intact bran layer takes longer to absorb water. Always rest for 10 minutes after cooking with the lid on.
Is brown rice better than white rice nutritionally?
Yes — brown rice retains the bran and germ layers which are removed to produce white rice. This means significantly more fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The trade-off is a slightly longer cooking time and chewier texture. For everyday nutrition, brown is clearly superior; for dishes requiring the lightness of white rice, white is more appropriate.
Is basmati rice gluten-free?
Yes — all rice is naturally gluten-free.
What is the best rice:water ratio for brown basmati?
1:2 (1 cup rice to 2 cups water) is the standard ratio. If you soak the rice first, reduce to 1:1.75. Always bring to the boil, then reduce to the lowest possible simmer, cover tightly, and cook undisturbed for the full time.
