Black rice — also known as forbidden rice — has a striking deep purple-black colour that turns a rich burgundy when cooked, and an outstanding antioxidant profile. These certified organic black grains from Just Natural Organic are exceptionally rich in anthocyanins — the same powerful polyphenols found in blueberries — making them one of the most antioxidant-rich grains available.
Also provides iron, Vitamin E, fibre (4.5g/100g), and protein (8.9g/100g) — nutritionally superior to white rice in every measurable dimension.
Certified organic by the Soil Association. Plastic-free, home-compostable packaging. Available in 500g.
Use in grain bowls, salads, sushi, and stir-fries for dramatic visual impact. Also excellent in black rice congee or pudding. Cook 1:2 ratio for 30–35 minutes. Rest 10 minutes.
Recipe idea — Black Rice & Mango Salad: Cook 200g black rice, cool completely. Toss with 1 diced mango, 1 diced avocado, ½ red onion (sliced), juice of 2 limes, 2 tbsp olive oil, fresh coriander, and a pinch of chilli. The deep purple rice against golden mango and green avocado creates a visually stunning salad rich in anthocyanins and healthy fats.
