Black seed — also called nigella seeds, black cumin, or kalonji — are the tiny, jet-black seeds of Nigella sativa, a flowering plant used as a spice and herbal remedy for over 3,000 years across the Middle East, South Asia, and North Africa. Recipe idea — Naan Bread with Black Seeds: Mix 300g plain flour, 7g fast-action yeast, 1 tsp sugar, ½ tsp salt, 150ml warm water, 3 tbsp yoghurt, and 1 tbsp oil into a smooth dough. Knead 5 minutes. Rest 1 hour. Divide into 6, roll oval-shaped, scatter with black seeds. Cook in a very hot, dry cast iron pan for 1–2 minutes per side until charred spots appear. Brush with garlic butter. The black seeds' peppery flavour on freshly made naan is one of the most satisfying bread experiences possible.
