Brazil nuts are the nutritional standout of the nut world for one reason above all others — their extraordinary selenium content. A single brazil nut contains 70–90mcg of selenium, approaching the entire adult NRV of 55mcg in one nut. These certified organic whole brazil nuts from Just Natural Organic are large, creamy-white kernels with a rich, distinctive flavour — slightly sweet, with an almost coconut-like undertone from their high saturated fat content.
Beyond selenium, brazil nuts are a good source of magnesium, phosphorus, thiamine (B1), Vitamin E, and copper. Selenium is essential for thyroid function, antioxidant defence (as a component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase), immune function, and DNA synthesis.
Certified organic by the Soil Association. Plastic-free, home-compostable packaging. Available in 125g, 250g and 500g.
Eat 2–3 daily as a selenium supplement — the simplest and most natural way to meet selenium requirements. Roughly chop and add to granola, trail mix, or energy balls. Slice over salads. Use in baking — chocolate and brazil nut brownies are a classic combination. Toast lightly for deeper flavour.
Recipe idea — Brazil Nut & Dark Chocolate Brownies: Melt 150g dark chocolate (70%+) with 100g butter. Whisk in 2 eggs and 150g caster sugar. Fold in 80g plain flour and a pinch of salt. Roughly chop 80g brazil nuts and fold in. Pour into a lined 20cm tin and bake at 180°C for 20–22 minutes until set at the edges but still slightly fudgy in the centre. The brazil nuts add rich creaminess and a selenium boost to every slice.

FAQs
How many brazil nuts should I eat per day?
1–3 brazil nuts per day is a widely recommended amount to meet selenium requirements. This provides 70–270mcg of selenium — the NRV is 55mcg and the UK safe upper limit is around 400mcg per day. Eating 1–2 daily is an effortless, natural way to meet selenium needs. Eating very large quantities daily over extended periods is not recommended.
Why is selenium so important?
Selenium is an essential trace mineral that functions as a component of several key antioxidant enzymes (selenoproteins), including glutathione peroxidase — the body's primary defence against oxidative stress. It is essential for thyroid hormone metabolism, immune function, DNA synthesis, and male fertility. The UK population has relatively low selenium intake due to low-selenium soils, making brazil nuts a particularly valuable addition to the diet.
Are brazil nuts high in saturated fat?
Yes — brazil nuts have a higher saturated fat content (15g/100g) than most other nuts, due to their fatty acid profile. However, dietary saturated fat from whole nut sources behaves differently to saturated fat from processed foods, and brazil nuts' broader nutritional package means they remain a worthwhile whole food.
Are these gluten-free?
Yes — brazil nuts are naturally gluten-free. Packed in a facility handling tree nuts, peanuts, sesame, and gluten-containing grains.
Where do brazil nuts come from?
Brazil nuts grow wild in the Amazon rainforest — they cannot be farmed commercially and are only found growing naturally. The trees rely on specific orchid bees for pollination and large mammals like agoutis to crack open their pods. This ecological specificity makes organic, sustainably wild-harvested brazil nuts particularly important for supporting Amazon conservation.
