Currants are the smallest and most intensely flavoured of the dried grape family — made from the tiny Black Corinth grape (originally from Corinth, Greece), they are seedless, dark, very sweet, and have a concentrated, slightly winey flavour that's quite distinct from larger raisins or sultanas. These certified organic currants from Just Natural Organic are the traditional British baking currant used in fruit cake, scones, and spotted dick for centuries.
Currants provide potassium, iron, copper, and boron alongside dietary fibre and polyphenol antioxidants — similar to other dried grapes, but in a more concentrated flavour package.
Certified organic by the Soil Association. Plastic-free, home-compostable packaging. Available in 250g.
Use in fruit cake, Christmas cake, and Christmas pudding. Add to scones, rock cakes, and Welsh cakes. Use in spotted dick and bread and butter pudding. Add to hot cross buns. Mix into granola or muesli. Use in mince pies (mixed with sultanas and raisins).
Recipe idea — Welsh Cakes: Mix 225g self-raising flour, 75g caster sugar, 1 tsp mixed spice, and a pinch of salt. Rub in 100g cold butter until breadcrumb-like. Stir in 75g currants and 1 beaten egg, adding a splash of milk if needed to form a soft dough. Roll to 5mm thick and cut into rounds. Cook on a lightly greased griddle or heavy frying pan over medium heat for 3 minutes per side until golden. Dust with caster sugar. Currants are absolutely essential to an authentic Welsh cake.

FAQs
Are these the same as blackcurrants?
No — despite the similar name, these are dried Zante currants (tiny dried Black Corinth grapes), not blackcurrants (Ribes nigrum — the fresh berry). Blackcurrants are not typically available as a dried fruit for baking. Zante currants are the type used in British baking.
Can I use currants instead of raisins?
Yes, in most recipes — currants are smaller and more intensely flavoured than raisins, so you may prefer to use slightly fewer by weight. They are essential to an authentic Christmas cake, spotted dick, and Welsh cakes, where their concentrated flavour plays a specific role.
Are these gluten-free?
Yes — currants are naturally gluten-free.
