White mulberries are the dried fruit of the white mulberry tree (Morus alba) — one of the most nutritionally distinctive dried fruits available. Unlike most dried fruits which are primarily sugars and fibre, white mulberries contain notable amounts of protein (13g per 100g — exceptional for a fruit), iron, calcium, and Vitamin C. These certified organic dried white mulberries from Just Natural Organic have a mild, honey-like sweetness with a slightly fibrous, chewy texture and a flavour reminiscent of vanilla and fig.

White mulberries also contain resveratrol (the same antioxidant compound found in red wine), 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) — a compound associated with blood sugar regulation — and anthocyanins. They are naturally lower in sugar than most dried fruits (around 50g per 100g) while providing a higher protein content.

Certified organic by the Soil Association. Plastic-free, home-compostable packaging. Available in 250g.

Eat straight from the bag. Add to porridge, muesli, or granola. Use in trail mix. Blend into smoothies. Add to energy balls. Use in baking as a raisin or sultana substitute.

Recipe idea — White Mulberry & Coconut Bliss Balls: Blend 150g pitted dates, 80g desiccated coconut, 50g dried white mulberries, 50g cashew pieces, and 1 tbsp coconut oil until combined. Roll into 12 balls, then roll each in desiccated coconut. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. A protein-rich, naturally sweetened snack with an unusual, delicate flavour from the mulberries.

FAQs

Why are white mulberries unusual among dried fruits?
Most dried fruits are primarily sugars and fibre — protein is negligible. White mulberries are exceptional at 13g protein per 100g, comparable to some legumes. They also contain 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), a compound associated with slowing carbohydrate absorption and supporting healthy blood glucose levels — making them a particularly interesting choice for those managing blood sugar.

Are these the same as black mulberries?
No — white mulberries (Morus alba) are a different species to black mulberries (Morus nigra). White mulberries are lighter in colour, milder in flavour, and have a higher protein content. Black mulberries have a more intensely tart, winey flavour. Both are nutritious but have different flavour profiles.

Are these gluten-free?
Yes — mulberries are naturally gluten-free.
