Oat groats are the whole oat kernel — the grain in its most minimally processed form, with only the inedible outer husk removed. These certified organic oat groats from Just Natural Organic are the purest form of oat available: the bran, germ, and endosperm all intact, providing the maximum nutritional value of the oat grain alongside a firm, chewy texture with an earthy, nutty flavour.
All rolled oats, steel cut oats, and oatmeal are made from oat groats — this is simply the unprocessed version. Provides the full spectrum of beta-glucan, fibre, protein, iron, and B vitamins in their most intact form. Lowest GI of all oat products.
Certified organic by the Soil Association. Plastic-free, home-compostable packaging. Available in 500g.
Cook in a 1:3 ratio for 45–60 minutes, or soak overnight and cook for 20–25 minutes. Use as a whole grain side dish (like brown rice), in soups and stews, or as the base of a hearty breakfast bowl. Can be sprouted for use in salads.
Recipe idea — Oat Groat Breakfast Bowl: Soak 150g oat groats overnight in cold water. Drain, then simmer in 450ml fresh water for 25 minutes until tender but still chewy. Top with sliced banana, a drizzle of almond butter, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and toasted seeds. The groats have a satisfying chewiness that keeps you full for hours — more substantial than any rolled oat breakfast.

FAQs
What are oat groats exactly?
Oat groats are the whole oat kernel after the indigestible outer husk has been removed — everything else (bran, germ, and endosperm) remains intact. All other oat products (rolled oats, steel cut, oatmeal) are made from oat groats by further processing. Groats are the most minimally processed form.
Do oat groats need soaking?
Soaking overnight significantly reduces cooking time from 45–60 minutes to 20–25 minutes and slightly improves digestibility by partially breaking down phytic acid. Drain and replace with fresh water before cooking.
Are these gluten-free?
Oats don't naturally contain gluten but are often cross-contaminated. These are not certified gluten-free.
