Prunes — dried plums — are one of the most extensively researched dried fruits in nutritional science, with particularly strong evidence for their role in supporting digestive health and bone density. These certified organic pitted prunes from Just Natural Organic are ready to eat, stone-free, and naturally soft and sweet with a deep, rich flavour. They provide significant Vitamin K, potassium, copper, and boron — the latter associated with bone mineral density — alongside sorbitol, a natural polyol that acts as a mild laxative and prebiotic.
Prunes are also one of the highest ORAC-value (antioxidant capacity) dried fruits, containing anthocyanins, chlorogenic acid, and neochlorogenic acid. Their high fibre content (7g per 100g) supports gut microbiome diversity.
Certified organic by the Soil Association. Plastic-free, home-compostable packaging. Available in 250g and 500g.
Eat straight from the bag. Simmer in water and serve with porridge or yoghurt. Use in Moroccan tagines with lamb or chicken. Stew with orange juice and spices. Add to bread pudding, Christmas cake, or sticky toffee pudding. Make prune and chocolate mousse.
Recipe idea — Prune & Almond Tagine: Brown 500g diced lamb (or chickpeas for vegan) in olive oil. Add 1 onion, 2 cloves garlic, 1 tsp each of cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and ginger. Pour in 400ml stock, add 150g prunes (halved), 1 tbsp honey, and 1 tbsp harissa. Simmer on low for 45 minutes (or 20 minutes in a pressure cooker). Serve over couscous with toasted almonds and fresh coriander. The prunes melt into the sauce, adding sweetness and depth.

FAQs
Do prunes really help with digestion?
Yes — prunes have strong clinical evidence for supporting digestive regularity. They contain sorbitol (a natural polyol with gentle laxative properties), insoluble fibre that adds bulk to stool, and chlorogenic acids that stimulate digestive enzyme activity. Several clinical trials have found prunes to be as effective as psyllium for managing mild constipation. A typical serving of 5–6 prunes per day is used in most studies.
Are prunes good for bone health?
Yes — prunes are one of the most studied foods for bone density. They provide Vitamin K (essential for osteocalcin production), boron (which may reduce calcium excretion), and polyphenol antioxidants that may reduce bone resorption. Several clinical trials have specifically examined prune consumption and bone mineral density with positive results.
Are these suitable for vegans?
Yes — 100% plant-based with no additives.
Are prunes the same as plums?
Prunes are dried plums — specifically varieties of European plum (Prunus domestica) that dry well without fermenting. Fresh plums become prunes through a drying process that concentrates their natural sugars, fibre, and minerals significantly. Some varieties can also be eaten fresh as "fresh prunes."
Are these gluten-free?
Yes — prunes are naturally gluten-free. Packed in a facility handling gluten-containing grains.
