Short grain white rice is the classic Japanese sushi and sticky rice variety — plump, round grains that cook to a tender, cohesive texture with a clean, mild flavour. These certified organic short grain white rice from Just Natural Organic are ideal wherever a slightly sticky, cohesive cooked rice is required.
Short grain white rice provides thiamine (B1), niacin (B3), and easily digestible carbohydrates. Its characteristic stickiness comes from a higher amylopectin starch content than long-grain varieties.
Certified organic by the Soil Association. Plastic-free, home-compostable packaging. Available in 500g.
Use for sushi, onigiri (rice balls), Japanese rice bowls (donburi), Korean bibimbap, rice pudding, and as a general sticky rice side dish. Rinse well. Cook 1:1.5 ratio for 15–18 minutes, rest 10 minutes.
Recipe idea — Onigiri (Japanese Rice Balls): Cook 300g short grain white rice and season with 1 tbsp rice vinegar and a pinch of salt. Wet your hands and take a handful of warm rice. Press a small piece of pickled plum (umeboshi) or tinned tuna in the centre, fold the rice around it, and press firmly into a triangle. Wrap in a strip of nori. A Japanese lunchbox staple ready in minutes.
