Steel cut oats — also called pinhead oats or Irish oats — are whole oat groats that have been cut into 2–3 pieces with steel blades, rather than steamed and rolled like porridge oats. These certified organic steel cut oats from Just Natural Organic have the most robust, chewy texture of all oat forms and a deeper, nuttier flavour — they retain their distinct, separate bite even after cooking.
Because they are minimally processed, steel cut oats have the lowest glycaemic index of all oat forms and the highest intact whole-grain content — providing all the beta-glucan, fibre, protein, and B vitamins of the oat grain in their most natural form.
Certified organic by the Soil Association. Plastic-free, home-compostable packaging. Available in 500g.
Cook in a 1:3 ratio for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Or soak overnight and cook for just 10 minutes. Use for porridge, overnight oats, and adding to slow-cooker breakfast recipes. Can be soaked overnight and eaten as overnight oats with no cooking.
Recipe idea — Slow Cooker Overnight Oats: Place 150g steel cut oats in a slow cooker with 600ml water, 200ml milk, 1 tbsp maple syrup, 1 tsp cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Cook on LOW for 6–8 hours (overnight). Wake up to perfectly cooked, creamy steel cut oats with minimal effort. Top with fresh fruit, nuts, and a drizzle of honey.

FAQs
What is the difference between steel cut oats and rolled oats?
Steel cut oats are whole groats cut into pieces — minimally processed, with a firm chewy texture and low GI. Rolled oats are steamed and flattened — they cook faster but have a softer texture and slightly higher GI. Steel cut give the most substantial, filling result; rolled oats are more convenient for everyday porridge.
Can I cook steel cut oats quickly?
Soak overnight in cold water, then drain and cook for just 10 minutes. Or cook in a pressure cooker for 3 minutes at high pressure. The slow cooker overnight method is the most convenient for most people.
Are these gluten-free?
Oats don't naturally contain gluten but are often cross-contaminated with wheat. These are not certified gluten-free.
