Sultanas are a golden variety of dried grape — lighter in colour, plumper, and sweeter than dark raisins, with a more delicate, honey-like flavour. These certified organic sultanas from Just Natural Organic are the Sultanina variety, sun-dried without added oil, sulphur, or sugar. Their mildness and golden colour make them particularly versatile in pale baked goods, breakfast dishes, and savoury recipes where dark raisins might be too assertive.
Like raisins, sultanas provide potassium, iron, copper, and boron, alongside dietary fibre and polyphenol antioxidants. Their slightly higher natural sugar content compared to dark raisins reflects their variety's natural sweetness.
Certified organic by the Soil Association. Plastic-free, home-compostable packaging. Available in 250g and 500g.
Add to porridge, muesli, or bircher. Use in scones, teabreads, hot cross buns, and rock cakes. Stir into rice pudding or bread and butter pudding. Add to savoury tagines, pilaf, or stuffing. Use in flapjacks or oat cookies. Mix into homemade granola.
Recipe idea — Traditional Sultana Scones: Mix 225g self-raising flour with 1 tsp baking powder and a pinch of salt. Rub in 55g cold butter until breadcrumb-like. Stir in 2 tbsp caster sugar, 75g sultanas, and enough milk (around 150ml) to form a soft dough. Pat to 2cm thick, cut into rounds, brush with milk, and bake at 220°C for 10–12 minutes until golden. Serve warm with clotted cream and jam. Sultanas are essential to the authentic British scone.

FAQs
What is the difference between sultanas and raisins?
Both are dried grapes, but from different varieties. Sultanas are made from Sultanina (Thompson Seedless) grapes and tend to be golden, plumper, and sweeter. Dark raisins are typically made from Muscat or other varieties and are darker, slightly tarter, and more intensely flavoured. Both are used in baking but sultanas are preferred in pale-coloured baked goods and anything requiring a delicate, sweet flavour.
Are sultanas the same as golden raisins?
Yes — "golden raisins" is the North American term for what the UK calls sultanas. They are the same fruit processed in the same way. The golden colour comes from the natural colour of the Sultanina grape, not from bleaching or sulphur treatment in these organic versions.
Are these sulphur-free?
Yes — these organic sultanas are dried without sulphur dioxide (E220). Conventional golden sultanas are often treated with sulphur to maintain their bright colour; organic versions oxidise naturally to a deeper golden-amber colour.
Are these gluten-free?
Yes — sultanas are naturally gluten-free.
Can I use sultanas in savoury dishes?
Yes — sultanas work beautifully in North African tagines, Indian biryanis, Middle Eastern stuffed peppers, and British-style bread sauce. Their sweetness provides a pleasant contrast to warm spices and savoury meats or pulses.
