Walnut halves are the most versatile format of walnut — intact enough to use as a garnish or in salads, and easily broken down for baking, sauces, and pesto. These certified organic walnut halves from Just Natural Organic are rich in omega-3 ALA (at around 9g per 100g, the highest omega-3 content of any commonly available nut), manganese, copper, and polyphenol antioxidants concentrated in the papery skin.

Walnuts are one of the few plant foods to provide a meaningful amount of omega-3 fatty acids, making them particularly valuable for those on plant-based diets. They also provide significant magnesium, phosphorus, B vitamins including B6 and folate, and the amino acid arginine, associated with cardiovascular health.

Certified organic by the Soil Association. Plastic-free, home-compostable packaging. Available in 125g and 250g.

Eat as a snack, scatter over salads, stir into porridge or yoghurt, use in baking (brownies, banana bread, flapjacks), blend into walnut pesto, or toast and use as a crunchy topping for roasted squash or beetroot dishes.

Recipe idea — Walnut & Roasted Beetroot Salad: Roast 3 medium beetroots (cubed) at 200°C for 35 minutes with olive oil and thyme. Toast 50g walnut halves in a dry pan for 3 minutes. Arrange beetroot over rocket with crumbled goat's cheese (or vegan alternative), toasted walnuts, and a dressing of 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar, 2 tbsp olive oil, and 1 tsp Dijon mustard. A simple, striking salad rich in omega-3, antioxidants, and folate.

FAQs

Why are walnuts the best nut for omega-3?
Walnuts contain around 9g of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid, the plant form of omega-3) per 100g — significantly more than any other nut. While ALA conversion to EPA and DHA is limited in the body, regular walnut consumption is associated with cardiovascular benefits and is widely recommended for plant-based diets as a meaningful omega-3 source.

Should I eat the papery skin?
Yes — the thin papery skin covering walnut kernels contains the highest concentration of polyphenol antioxidants in the nut. Some people find it slightly bitter, but removing it reduces the nutritional value considerably. Blanching briefly in hot water loosens the skin if you prefer to remove it.

Are walnuts good for brain health?
Walnuts are often associated with brain health — partly because of their omega-3 content, and partly because their shape resembles the brain. More substantively, walnuts are rich in polyphenols, DHA precursors (via ALA), and Vitamin E, all of which are associated with cognitive function and neuroprotection in research literature.

Are these gluten-free?
Yes — walnuts are naturally gluten-free. Packed in a facility handling tree nuts, peanuts, sesame, and gluten-containing grains.

How should I store walnuts?
Walnuts have a high polyunsaturated fat content that makes them susceptible to rancidity. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, or refrigerate after opening. Use within 3 months of opening.
