Plastic Free July: Small Actions, Big Impact

Plastic pollution has become a pressing environmental crisis. The urgency to address this issue has led to the rise of initiatives such as Plastic Free July, a global movement that encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to reduce their plastic consumption for the entire month of July.

In this Eco Natural Products blog post, we’ll explore the significance of Plastic Free July, delve into the impacts of plastic pollution, and provide practical tips for participating in this transformative campaign!

Understanding the Plastic Problem:

Plastic has become deeply integrated into our daily lives due to its durability and versatility. However, its long-lasting presence in the environment has given rise to concerns.

From single-use plastic bottles and bags, to microplastics found in personal care products, our consumption habits have led to a significant accumulation of plastic waste.

These non-biodegradable materials take an incredibly long time to break down, and can lead to pollution in our oceans, rivers, and ecosystems.

The importance of Plastic Free July:

Plastic Free July is a movement that challenges us to re-evaluate our relationship with plastic and empowers us to make conscious choices.

By actively participating in the campaign, we not only reduce our own plastic waste but also raise awareness and inspire others to join the movement.

The collective impact of millions of individuals striving for a plastic-free future can be a catalyst for broader change and encourage governments and businesses to adopt more sustainable practices.

Why take part in Plastic Free July:

“When 140 million people take a small step, it is noticed. Choosing to refuse a single-use plastic item this July means joining a big movement of people taking steps to end plastic pollution.

"Importantly, it also means showing businesses and governments they need to step up too,” says the campaign’s founder, Rebecca Prince-Ruiz.

The campaign says that Plastic Free July participants typically reduce 18kg of household waste and recycling each year. This equates to approximately 38 times the weight of waste collected by the world’s biggest clean-ups last year.

“The significance of preventing waste before it enters our ecosystem cannot be stressed enough.

"We know that the every-day items that pollute our oceans have often only been used once or twice before being thrown in the bin,” said Rebecca Prince-Ruiz.

“By taking steps to reduce, reuse and refill, we are being part of the solution to eliminate waste."

Simple steps towards a plastic-free lifestyle:

Refuse Single-Use Plastics: Begin by rejecting single-use items such as plastic bags, straws, cutlery, and takeout containers. Opt for reusable alternatives like cloth bags, stainless steel straws, and bamboo utensils.

Embrace Reusables: Invest in durable reusable items such as water bottles, coffee cups, and food containers. Carry them with you to avoid relying on single-use options.

Choose Package-Free: Look for products with minimal or no packaging, and purchase only what you need.

Explore Sustainable Alternatives: Seek out eco-friendly alternatives for everyday items. Consider using bar soap instead of liquid soap in plastic bottles or try beeswax wraps as a substitute for plastic wrap.

Spread Awareness: Share your Plastic Free July journey on social media, engage in discussions, or organise local events to educate others about the impacts of plastic pollution and the steps they can take to make a difference.

And remember, small steps make a big difference!
